Danforth became more accessible with the turn of the 20th century. The Prince Edward Viaduct was built to connect Bloor and Danforth, which eventually encouraged a streetcar boom in Danforth. During the early 1900s, streetcars were the main form of transportation around the village, and housing options began to erupt in the north and south.
In the 1960s, the streetcar was replaced by the subway, leaving Danforth with six subway stations and opening up the neighbourhood to commuters and growing businesses. Today, Danforth Village is a thriving district with a strong sense of community pride and endless opportunities for entertainment, relaxation, and fun!

The Big Carrot Community Market is a natural food market committed to providing residents of Danforth with organic products. A one-stop-shop since 1983, the market offers healthy foods, organic body and home options, bulk items, and a holistic dispensary. Certified nutritionists are on staff and available for tours of the market and workshops on various foods, supplements, and products. The Big Carrot also provides extensive outreach to the community for all ages and supports local charities through fundraisers and donations. The market is Canada’s largest worker-owned natural food business and has two locations: Danforth Avenue and Southwood Drive in Toronto.
A family tradition of Friday night pizzas turned into a passion, and One Night Only Pizza was born. Luke and Brianna Skye decided to start selling pizzas off their front porch for one night only, but their little outfit quickly grew in popularity. They opened a shop in 2020 to bring fresh flavor and fun to the Danforth community. Their pizzas are made with local ingredients, and the dough is fermented for 72 hours and made with Canadian flour. Love and attention go into every detail — they promise you won’t taste another pizza quite like the pies at One Night Only.
For shopping opportunities, residents enjoy exploring the stores along Danforth Avenue. Moss, a local favorite for furniture and garden finds, and Re: Reading, a thriving independent bookshop, are two unique destinations along the busy street, but you can find something for all tastes along Danforth Avenue.
Things to Do
Taste Of The Danforth is Canada’s largest street festival. Welcoming over 1.3 million guests over three days, the festival is Toronto’s signature event. Organized by GreekTown on the Danforth Business Improvement Association, a nonprofit group, the event celebrates Greek heritage and the multicultural communities of Toronto. Featuring delicious food vendors, live music, art, and dance, Taste of the Danforth is everyone’s favorite event of the year.
Originally a movie theater in the early 1900s, Danforth Music Hall has been remodeled and restructured to accommodate the best bands and performers in the country. The venue features artists across all genres, family-friendly performances, and comedy shows and is available for private parties and events. If you’re looking for outdoor opportunities, Danforth is also home to several excellent parks.
